Forest of the Future Water Filter is the fourth project of the main idea, mimics a pine root system to clean the water of rivers or any water source. I got my inspiration from xylem which is the tissue of vascular plants that transports water and nutrients from the soil to the stems and leaves. The xylem acts as a natural filtration system for the tree.

My prototype consists of a tube that runs from inside a lake or any source of water that is not contaminated with heavy metals or chemicals to land, so people can have access to clean water. The filter will remove dirt, big objects, and some bacterias.

I started my project by prototyping on paper the idea that helped me to confirm the possible pieces that I needed for this project. Then I collected all-recyclable materials.

The pipe will work as the exterior of the root, the tight sponges have the functions of the moss.

The stones will work like volcanic stones or the fibers of the pine tree, the yellow sponge is the soft part of the pine tree system.

The screens at the end of the pipe will keep larger objects out of the pipe.

I assembled the pipe and redo it again since the sponge was very tight and the water wasn’t going out of the pipe. Once I remove more of the sponges and stones the water went through.

What I will improve?
This was a fun and challenging project, I needed to make sure the water wasn’t dripping, as well as to make sure that the water was running with enough strength. The next step will be to add a motor that can pull water to a community in need.
